Originally from Midland, Texas, Kay attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she received a BS in Vocational Home Economics with emphasis on interior design and gourmet foods. She lived in Paris France studying at the renowned La Varenne de Cuisine. Upon completing her course she returned to Dallas and joined David Griffin & Co. and was a multi-million dollar salesman, focusing in the Turtle Creek and Highland Park neighborhoods.

In 1987, she moved to New York City and attended the graduate program at Sotheby's Auction House for American Fine & Decorative Arts and the Appraisal Studies program at NYU. Then in London, Kay completed the Sotheby's European Arts program. Her love for Dallas and the community brought her back to "Big D" where she has been an active member of The Dallas Museum of Art, The Dallas Public Library, The Junior League of Dallas, and the Salvation Army Day Care Center.
