The most exciting event on the horizon in the Dallas Arts scene is the completion of the Winspear Opera House and the Wyly Theater in the Arts District in fall 2009. When these new theaters are completed, there will be over 300 nights of performances a year in the district. These new theaters will house the Dallas Civic Opera and the Dallas Theater Center, both of which are approaching their 50th anniversaries.
These new theaters will join the Myerson Symphony Center, home of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, in the Arts District as well as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Museum of Asian Art. Also in the district, the new home for the renowned Booker T. Washington Performing Arts High School will open in 2008.
Dallas is also the home of many vital independent theater groups and art galleries. While the theater groups are spread all over the city, many art galleries are now located in the Design District on Oak Lawn west of Stemmons Freeway.
There are also many opportunities for classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery and related disciplines through SMU Continuing Education in University Park and the Creative Arts Center on Ferguson Road in East Dallas as well as local community colleges.
The Dallas Summer Musicals School, located in the historic Majestic Theater on Elm Street in downtown Dallas, has classes throughout the year for students as well as for adults interested in the performing arts.
